11th Edition 40K Terrain: 3 Fast Layouts That Play Great Now
Eleventh is here and tables are playing differently already. Cover that helps you get hit less, easier hiding, and more pressure on true line of sight means board design matters a lot. If you host games at home, you can build great looking, fair boards in under an hour with a handful of solid pieces. Here are three tested layout recipes you can copy tonight, plus quick paint and placement tips.
Recipe 1: Crossing Lanes Cityfight
Goal: mid-board fights with safe approaches and flanking shots if you earn them. Think dense ruins around the centre with staggered lanes you can contest, rather than one long bowling alley.
- Footprint: divide the board into a 3 x 3 grid. Anchor the four central-edge cells with medium ruins. Leave the middle cell partly open for objectives, then stitch the gaps with low walls and rubble.
- Line of sight: ensure no deployment zone can draw an uninterrupted shot to the opposite zone. Stand at eye level and check. If you can see through, rotate or slide a ruin 3 to 5 cm.
- Verticality: add one tall feature that can see across two lanes but not the whole table. Reward movement without creating turn one deletes.
Pieces that slot in perfectly:
- Two to three medium ruins such as 28mm Building Ruins Terrain.
- Low blockers for stitching lanes like 28mm Wall Ruins Terrain, 6 Pcs and Rubble Barricades.
- Cratered ground in the centre to slow and protect infantry advances, for example 4x 28mm Craters.

Quick paint tip: hit ruins with a dark grey primer, heavy drybrush a warm grey, then edge pick with a bright stone tone. Flick a thin brown oil wash into recesses to pop detail. Wipe the excess with a soft cloth after 30 minutes for instant depth.
Recipe 2: Ruined Plaza With Safe Corners
Goal: create two safe corner pockets for staging pushes, with a contested plaza in front of them. This rewards trading and mid-board objectives without punishing gunlines or melee skew.
- Place one large or two medium ruins in opposite corners, touching the board edges to form true corner pockets.
- In the centre, use a broken structure and scatter to block straight shots across the plaza. Leave diagonal peeks that require movement.
- Add one vantage style piece near the midline, offset to a flank, so it matters but can be contested.
Plug-and-play picks:
- A striking centrepiece such as Ruined Church or modular ruins like Lost City Building Set 2.
- Wall segments to trim firing angles, for example 28mm Wall Ruins Terrain, 6 Pcs.
- Additional half-height cover from Rubble Barricades.

Quick paint tip: speckle the plaza stones with a toothbrush and thinned black-brown acrylic, then lightly drybrush back to unify. It reads as grime from a distance and photographs well.
Recipe 3: Diagonal Rush With Center Bunker
Goal: fast routes along one long diagonal, with a tough bunker in the middle to fight over. Great for missions that reward flips and turn-by-turn pressure.
- Lay a diagonal chain of three ruins from one corner toward the far edge. Break line of sight between each hop with low walls.
- Drop a solid central block to stop across-table beams. Leave shoulder peeks so movement still finds shots.
- Finish with craters and rubble in the open diagonal to slow vehicles and protect infantry dashes.
Terrain that nails the brief:
- Core blocks like 28mm Building Ruins Terrain and Lost City Building Set 2.
- Low cover from 28mm Wall Ruins Terrain, 6 Pcs and Rubble Barricades.
- Ground texture and movement tax with 4x 28mm Craters.

Quick paint tip: push contrast on the bunker piece. Add soot streaks under broken windows with thinned black, then stipple rust oranges onto exposed metal trims for read at arm’s length.
General Placement Rules That Keep Games Fair
- Block the centre generously. The middle should deny a clean shot from one zone to the other. Peek angles are earned through movement.
- Alternate tall and low. Place a tall piece near one lane, then answer it with low cover in the opposing lane so neither dominates.
- Mind true line of sight. Check from miniature height, not standing height. Kneel to the table when you place your last pieces.
- Cover that matters. Low walls should matter for infantry to-hit, while big ruins break sight for vehicles. Mix both every 12 to 18 inches.
- Rotate often. A 10 degree twist on one ruin can remove accidental across-table arcs. Nudge and recheck.
Everything in this article is compatible with 28mm play across systems, including skirmish games that love dense boards. Our prints ship unpainted and ready to prime, so you can dial in the palette that matches your army or club pack.
